Adding an EV Charger or Heat Pump? Check Your Electrical Service First

Electric vehicles and heat pumps are great upgrades, but they're also two of the biggest electrical loads a home can have. A Level 2 EV charger typically needs a dedicated 40- or 50-amp circuit, and a whole-home heat pump can draw as much as an electric range.

Start by checking your main breaker. If it says 60 or 100, your home's service may already be close to its limit, especially with an electric range, dryer, or central air in the mix.

A load calculation tells you for sure. We add up what the house actually draws and what you're planning to add, then tell you whether a new circuit is enough or whether the service itself needs upgrading, usually to 200 amps.

A service upgrade replaces the service entrance, meter connection, and panel, and we coordinate with the utility for the disconnect and reconnect. It's a bigger project than adding a circuit, but it gives your home room for everything you'll want to add over the next twenty years.

Planning both an EV charger and a heat pump? Do the service upgrade once, sized for both, rather than paying for two rounds of work.
